What appeared to be a pretty active day turned into one of the busiest days in the recent history of the organization on Tuesday when the Cubs made a flurry of trades and roster moves that involved 14 players, cash and International slot money.

The Cubs signed three international prospects and reportedly agreed to a deal with the top international prospect, Dominican outfielder Eloy Jimenez. The Cubs inked RHP Jefferson Mejia, RHP Erling Moreno and shortstop Gleyber Torres.

The Cubs traded RHP Scott Feldman and Steve Clevenger to the Orioles for RHP Jake Arrieta, RHP Pedro Strop and slot money. The Cubs sent Carlos Marmol, cash and slot money to the Dodgers for RHP Matt Guerrier. Minor league infielder Ronald Torreyes was traded to Houston for slot money. The Cubs recalled Dave Sappelt and LHP Chris Rusin from Triple-A Iowa and placed Ryan Sweeney on the 60-day DL to make room for Matt Guerrier. When the dust settled, the Cubs 40-man roster still stands at 40 players.

And the Cubs are not done making moves. Pedro Strop and Matt Guerrier are expected to be added to the active roster prior to Wednesday night’s game which could mean that Shawn Camp and Henry Rodriguez are on their way out according to the Tribune. The Cubs are “ready to make more trades” according to Jed Hoyer.

The Sun-Times reported that it is certain Matt Garza, Kevin Gregg and “perhaps three or four more” players on the Major League roster will be “gone” by the end of the month.

Jeff Samardzija told the Tribune he was not thrilled with the moves the front office made on Tuesday. Samardzija does not think the team improved by dealing Scott Feldman. Samardzija said it was a shame to see Feldman and Steve Clevenger leave the team. Samardzija hopes the new guys “bring the same attitude to the field every day” that Feldman and Clevenger did.

Kevin Gregg is happy with the three additions the Cubs made to the organization on Tuesday. Gregg played with Jake Arrieta and Pedro Strop last year in Baltimore and was with Matt Guerrier in Dodgers camp this past spring.

Matt Garza

According to a report from the Tribune, Matt Garza is “as good as gone” and the Cubs are hoping to receive “some top prospects” in return.

Bruce Levine thinks if Garza is traded to the Rangers, the deal could still include Mike Olt.

Carlos Villanueva

The Cubs plan to insert Carlos Villanueva back into the rotation once he is stretched back out. The Cubs began the process on Tuesday when they used Villanueva to piggyback Chris Rusin. Villanueva threw 44 pitches over 2 2/3 innings. The next step would be to get Villanueva to around 60 pitches and the Cubs appear to be targeting for Villanueva to return to the rotation full time after the All-Star break.

Alfonso Soriano

According to the Sun-Times, Alfonso Soriano wants to know if the Cubs plan to trade him. Soriano said he does not want to be “off guard” but he has a full no trade clause. The Cubs would have to get his permission to trade him. Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer have publicly stated on numerous occasions if they have a possible deal for Soriano they feel would be in his best interest, as well as the team’s, they will go to him with what is going on and keep him in the loop the entire way.

During an interview on MLB Network Radio on Monday, Jed Hoyer said they have never asked Soriano for a list of teams he would approve a trade to.

Minor League News

Chris Rusin was named to the PCL All-Star team on Tuesday. The Triple-A All-Star game is in Reno on July 17.

The Smokies announced on Tuesday that they will have a rather large representation in the Southern League All-Star game. Six Smokies were named to the squad: SS Arismendy Alcantara, 3B Christian Villanueva, C Rafael Lopez, OF Matt Szczur, RHP Kyle Hendricks and RHP Alberto Cabrera

Jake Arrieta is expected to report to Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday. For now, Arrieta is expected to take Chris Rusin’s spot in the I-Cubs rotation.

News, Notes and Rumors

According to Jayson Stark, there is an interesting wrinkle in the Carlos Marmol deal. If Marmol does not work out and the Dodgers release him and he signs with another team, the Dodgers will receive more money from the Cubs.

Jon Heyman reported that the Padres tried to trade for Jake Arrieta. Heyman did not say whether or not the Padres and Orioles discussed a deal or if San Diego tried to acquire him from the Cubs. According to Heyman, the Cubs want to hold onto him.

The Orioles announced Steve Clevenger will report to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday.

According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox were not “heavily involved” in talks with the Cubs for Scott Feldman. The Red Sox are in wait and see mode and would like to see how their rotation shakes out before the All-Star break.

According to FanGraphs, the Orioles upgraded with Scott Feldman and the Cubs continue stocking up.

Multiple reports on Tuesday indicated the Cubs would receive around $1 million in payroll relief in the deal with the Dodgers for Carlos Marmol. The Cubs will save money but only around $500,000.
